2013 National Essay Competition - UBA Foundation Calls for Entries from Senior Secondary School Students In Nigeria.

Students
in secondary schools across the country have been invited to submit entries in
the 2013 UBA Foundation National Essay Competition. The essay competition
for secondary students is organized by UBA Foundation; the corporate social
responsibility arm of UBA to encourage healthy and intellectual competition
among secondary school students in Nigeria.
Ijeoma Aso, Managing
Director/CEO, UBA Foundation, announced the call for entries at a press
conference held on Thursday at the bank’s head office in
Lagos
. She said that all senior secondary
schools students across the country are eligible to participate in the
competition. “The 3 best essayists are selected as the overall winners from 12
finalists that will emerge from the first round of the competition. The
first, second and third prize winners will receive N1,000,000.00, N750,000.00
and N500,000.00 in educational grants respectively” she stated.
The national essay
competition which is in its third consecutive year, has witnessed increased
participation from students since it was first launched in 2011.
According to her there were more than 2000 entries from all over the
country in 2012 representing a 300 per cent increase from the previous year.
“The Essay competition is
meant to complement UBA Foundation’s ‘Read Africa Initiative’ which is also
part of the Foundation’s efforts in arresting the falling standard of
education on the continent. This year we expect to receive more than 4000
entries for the competition. We encourage all senior secondary students across
the country to send an entry with the next six weeks when the competition will
be open. Entries close by November 1, 2013 and no late entry will be accepted”
she explained.
To participate in the competition,
eligible senior secondary students are expected to send in handwritten entries
on the topic ‘How
Reading
has Impacted my
Knowledge’ to the UBA Foundation’s office in
Lagos
. At the end of October, 2013 when
entries close, four renowned Nigerian Professors will review the entries and
select an initial shortlist of 12 for further assessment until the overall 3
best candidates emerge.

said the essay competition falls within the four focus
areas of the Foundation; Education, Economic Empowerment, Environment and
Special Project. According to him, the Bank’s CSR projects are geared toward

the exercise. Education is very strategic to us as an institution. Each year,

marking process is a comprehensive and rigorous process that reflects

you for your interest in the American Middle Eastern Network for
Dialogue at Stanford (AMENDS). AMENDS offers a unique opportunity to
interact, collaborate, and form personal relationships with fellow youth
leaders from across the Middle East, North Africa, and the United
States, while exchanging ideas and implementing initiatives that work
towards a better future. AMENDS has three main components: networking,
summit, and the AMENDS Talks. During the summit, delegates will share
their ideas, collaborate on their initiatives, and interact with world
leaders in workshops, panel discussions, and formal networking events.
This year, the AMENDS summit will take place on April 9-14, 2014.
Delegates should be between the ages of 18 and 28.
The conference
will culminate in the AMENDS Talks, presentations from all of the
delegates on their initiatives, ideas, and experiences. These

change in the MENA region and/or in U.S.- MENA relations. We will also
heavily consider the past experiences and backgrounds of each delegate

If so, you are just the person we are looking for to speak at our event Youth: The future of Sustainable Landscapes to be held atthe Global Landscapes Forum on 16 November, 2013 on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Warsaw, Poland.
Far from being a talkfest, the event will harness the energy,
technological savvy-ness, competitive spirit and ideas of youth — both
at the conference and online — to construct concrete, action-orientated
pledges that youth can (and will) undertake to help achieve sustainable
landscapes. Why do we need an event targeted to youth?
Important global policy debates and decision making for landscapes
sectors too often take place with very little involvement of young
people. However, there is compelling evidence to show why young people
should be more actively involved. An ageing population of actors in
natural resource sector (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, conservation,
development and industry) across the world are not being replenished by
youth — these sectors are too often seen as an ‘employment of last
resort’ as the work is perceived to be for rural, poor non-educated
people who do not have other employment options.

Yet millions of youth remain unemployed and governments are not
making significant, large-scale effective policies targeting young
people working in landscapes. If young farmers, foresters and fishery
managers do not replace the ageing producers, there is concern that
sustainable future landscapes will be seriously compromised in the next
10-15 years. Conditions are increasingly challenging. There is less
arable land, dwindling natural resources, a need for more rapidly
evolving climate-adapted techniques, more market pressures, and there
are fewer labor opportunities. Agenda:

How can you apply?
We’re looking for two different sets of inspiring and energetic speakers:
Thought leaders in youth issues: Inspiring leaders who have changed the way youth are perceived in natural resource management sectors.
Youth champions: Have you successfully set up a project or
business in the natural resources sector that shows how young people can
make a difference? Share your success story with us.
With “natural resources”, we are looking to cover a wide range of
topics: agriculture, forestry, fisheries, livestock, land/air/water
management, nature conservation, climate change adaptation, sustainable
environmental development and its related industries.
To apply, or if you know someone that who would be the perfect
candidate, please send us a 200 word proposal including: the speaker
name, a short biography, whether the speaker is a “thought leader” or
“youth champion” and a description of the talk.

Potential speakers will be put forward to a selection committee and
will be notified by October. We will try to cover the travel and
accommodation costs for speakers who are unable to secure their own

International Drawing Competition :: Food for a Healthy World
YUNGA is proud to present the International Drawing Competition: Food for a Healthy World. Food for a Healthy World is
a youth education initiative about food and nutrition. It promotes
awareness of the importance of a diversity of nutritious foods for a
healthy environment and for healthy people. It also highlights some
global challenges relating to food – such as hunger, malnutrition, the
food system, and climate change. The competition empowers children and
young people with knowledge to make more informed food choices and to be
active agents of change in our society.
This competition encourages children and young people to create artwork and drawings that express why nutritious foods are important for a healthy world.
Participants
This international drawing competition is open to ALL children and young people from 6 to 20 years old.
Competition rules
The drawing should reflect an issue concerning nutritious foods. The
drawings may reflect environmental or social issues. Learn more by
reading the “Time to Think and Act” section (pages 5-7). You can plan
and develop some educational activities to raise your group’s awareness
about food, nutrition and food production topics before they start
drawing.
Drawings
should be on white A4-size or letter-size paper in the round or square
frames provided inthe annexed templates (see the drawing competition form).
The diameter of the round frame and length of the square should be 18
cm. Pictures not submitted in this format cannot be considered in the
competition.
Drawings should be submitted giving the
full name, date of birth, country and postal and/or email address of
the participant. Drawings submitted without this information cannot be
considered in the competition.
Remind your group that
the drawing could be used for making small badges and large posters!
Encourage them to use bright, bold colours. Participants may use
drawing materials of any type: pens, pencils, paints, with the exception
of crayons as they do not reproduce well. They are also allowed to use
computer graphic programmes.
The drawings must be
the child’s or youth’s original creation. Most importantly they should
usetheir imagination and have lots of fun!
Deadline and submission of entries
The deadline for submitting your drawings is 1 October 2013. The postmark date will be regarded as the date of delivery.

Please note that if your submission is sent electronically you should
keep the original drawing in a safe place as we may require the
original if your drawing is selected.
Competition prizes
A panel of FAO staff will choose the winning drawings. Prizes of US$500will be awarded to the winner of each age group (6-10, 11-15 and 16-20 years old), US$200 will be awarded to the runner up of each age group and US$100 will be awarded to the third best drawing of
each age group. In addition, Certificates of Recognition, signed by a
United Nations official and a special gift to the schools of the
winning artworks will be given.
Last but not least, the artworks will be used in logos, posters, FAO
