Ecohealth conference is a key forum for researchers, practitioners and educators whose work spans the fields of ecology, human and veterinarian medicine, planning, social sciences, international development and beyond. The conference provides an opportunity to address issues ranging from environmental impact on human and animal health and transmission of infectious diseases, to conservation and ecosystem management, to rural and urban development and planning. The conference is also an opportunity to engage with and profile voices outside of academia and to explore new collaborations with community groups, businesses, policy makers, the media and others.

The scholarships
In addition to free registration, the travel grants cover the costs of transportation from your own country, travel visas and four nights of accommodation in Montréal.

Eligibility
Journalists specialized in the coverage of health and the environment,irrespective of their gender, age, nationality, place of residence and media (print, radio, TV, web) are welcome to apply. Journalists attending will be expected to publish articles and/or programme content on the various issues addressed by the conference.

Application procedure
The jury will select eight professional, fulltime or freelance journalists, specialized in the coverage of health and the environment, with comprehensive experience in traditional and/or digital media. Candidates are asked to send their CV, coordinates, identification pages of their passport, three articles or video or audio productions on health and environmental issues in the language of origin, and a one-page essay in English describing why they should be selected and what they will do if they win the competition.

Criteria
Judging will be based on overall excellence. Criteria will include:
♦ Fair, balanced and objective reporting 
♦ Informative and well-researched  
♦ Adherence to high journalistic standards 
♦ Clarity, insight and respect for the audience
♦ Creative use of the medium’s unique capabilities 
♦ Relevance to the conference themes
The jury will also weigh the resources available to the journalist when selecting the winners.

Important: The final criterion in the search for a winner will be the proposed dissemination plans for post conference articles and content.

Selection committee and decision
The World Federation of Science Journalists administers the competition and is solely responsible for the selection of the winning journalists. The jury, a sub-committee of the WFSJ Board, will select the eight journalists on the basis of submitted work, on the applicant’s CV and motivation statement.

EcoHealth 2014 is the fifth international conference organized under the auspices of the IAEH. Previous biennial conferences were held in Wisconsin (2006), Mérida (2008), London (2010) and Kunming (2012).

The scholarships are funded by the Canada's International Development Research Centre.

The Emerging Institutions Fellowship Program (EIFP) (our Africa Fellowship) provides hands-on service opportunities for young business and development professionals from around the world at Africa’s leading for-profit and nonprofit firms. It is designed to match financial capital invested in emerging African businesses with the human capital needed to take these institutions to scale

Who are Emerging Institution Fellows?
Fellows come to the EIFP with a diverse set of backgrounds and skills set. At a minimum, all fellows are required to have an undergraduate degree, a commitment to excellence, be 35 years or less and be fluent in English. Host organizations may also designate other specific skill requirements for their Fellows. Other requirements include:

Two to ten years of professional experience
MBA candidate or early to mid-level professional with interest in/familiarity with emerging markets

2. Letters of Recommendation: LDI Africa requires two letters of recommendation from individuals who know you in a professional capacity and can write about your skills and experiences as well as your potential for success an LDI Africa Fellow.
3. Review Process: Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee. Phone interviews will be conducted with semi-finalists. Host organizations will conduct Skype video interviews with selected finalists. Host organizations will make their final recommendations to LDI Africa and LDI Africa will notify the selected candidates.

Audio-visuals can be powerful medium for spreading ideas, changing perceptions, telling the untold stories of corruption in our society, and making citizens and power-holders more accountable. With the objective of “engaging youth for telling accountability stories” we Onion Films and Accountability Lab are jointly proud to announce the sixth Young Cuts! - a twenty-day film-making workshop totally designed for beginners and young people.

TOPICS:The meaning and importance of accountability, raising accountability issues through visual media, Story selection, planning, writing, camera technique, conceptualization, developing and writing script, direction, cinema psychology, shooting and editing short films. The "hands-on" approach will be emphasized and by the end of the workshop, participant will have the opportunity to produce a short film on a best story selected from the idea market.

This workshop will be divided into two parts:

Part 1: The class-based film-making workshop will run for six days. During this “hands-on” training, the participants will learn from several filmmakers and accountability-related professionals, and then make two films. The first film will be photo-film where they will combine a number of pictures that tell a story. The second film will be motion film (silent film) that will help to bring out creativity from the participants by not using sound or text.

Part 2: After learning the fundamentals of conceptualization, scripting, shooting, and editing, participants will head to the field, where they will have the opportunity to use their skills to produce a third and final film. Participants will be divided into 2-4 teams, will select a story based on accountability-related stories pitched by the participants themselves in the idea market, and will produce the film within a time period of fifteen days as their final project.

A closing ceremony of the workshop will be held at the MOVIE CLUB with screening of all the best films made by participants during the workshop.

TARGET AUDIENCE: This workshop is designed for young people. No prior film making experience is required.

EVENT INTRODUCTION

The event is a dynamic platform for innovative and enthusiastic youths to come forward and join in the #Youth Action Fund Nepal’s social initiative. It allows the YAF grantees to share their progress and project details through interactive presentations.
The event allows youth to share their ideas, participate in workshops, inspires and motivates them towards social cause. It provides an excellent opportunity to become a part of sixteen #Youth Organizations within Nepal and get to know and support their cause. The UW School of Law’s Sustainable International Development Law program is pleased to partner with TRACE International, a leading nonprofit membership organization focused on anti-bribery compliance, to offer a new LL.M. scholarship aimed at developing exceptional young leaders in the field of anti-corruption who are committed to advancing commercial transparency.

Guidelines and Application Process

The TRACE Scholar Program will fully fund, with tuition, lodging and travel, to an international lawyer from a developing country to pursue studies related to strategies and tools for increasing transparency and reducing corruption. The UW Law TRACE Scholar will spend an academic year at the University of Washington followed by a paid summer internship at TRACE headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland. The person selected as a TRACE Scholar must be ready to commence his/her studies in late August 2014 for a period of one year.
TRACE Scholars will have a demonstrated interest in anti-corruption efforts and will write their LL.M. thesis on a subject related to anticorruption: international instruments, compliance or enforcement. They will enroll in relevant courses focused on business ethics, rule of law, governance and/or economic development. The TRACE Scholar Program will provide emerging leaders and professionals with an interest in anti-corruption and bribery prevention with an intensive course of study followed by a practical and “hands-on” internship.
The deadline for receipt of applications is April 20, 2014.

Student Qualifications / Criteria for applying:

A first degree in law or equivalent
Is a national from a developing country (as defined by the World Bank)
Will make commitment to return to applicant’s home country to work for a period of 2-3 years
Strong English skills. The following minimum score is required, (test scores must be less than two years old):
- 580 TOEFL
- 237 TOEFLC
- 92 TOEFLiBT
- 7.0 IELTS
- 65 Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
Note: Candidate may take the TOEFL after submitting his or her application if scheduling does not permit an earlier testing.
Evidence of leadership skills
Willingness to participate in interviews via Skype
Ready to commence studies in late August 2014 for a period of one year

The Melbourne Youth Force, in collaboration with the AIDS 2014 Youth Program, is organising a Youth Pre-Conference, open to young people who will be attending the 20th International AIDS Conference. It will include informative sessions and skills-building workshops on topics related to HIV/AIDS, ranging from scientific knowledge to effective political advocacy. Please refer to the FAQs for more details.

In order for your application to be considered, you must be a young person between the ages of 15-26 who is a registered conference delegate with guaranteed support to attend the 20th International AIDS Conference (IAC) or a local youth applicant from Melbourne.

All information provided will be treated with confidentiality. Completed application forms will only be shared with those who are responsible for choosing participants for the Pre-Conference. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Following an application to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, we are very pleased to report that funding has been secured for seven scholarships for candidates from developing African and South Asian Commonwealth countries* to study for the part-time Master’s in International Human Rights Law starting September 2014.

The Commonwealth Kellogg Alistair Berkley Scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, the Alistair Berkley Charitable Trust (African awards only) and Kellogg College, Oxford and provide course and college fees at Oxford University over two years, return air travel from the scholar’s home country for each residential session and a stipend for reading materials.

To be considered for these scholarships in 2014-15, you must submit an online application for the Master’s in International Human Rights Law to Oxford by 23 April 2014 (please note that admissions are exlusively open for applicants to this scholarship scheme; if you do not meet the requirements of the scheme you will not be considered for admission to the course).

Become a ONE Youth Ambassador

Do you want to get more involved in the fight against extreme poverty? Develop new skills in creating change? And join hundreds of other young people for two days of activism in Brussels?
We are recruiting more than 100 volunteers across Europe to lead the fight against extreme poverty by campaigning locally, nationally and online.
You will become a leader for the ONE Campaign in your community and beyond, carrying out a variety of creative, ambitious, and innovative actions to support our campaigns, particularly around the European elections in May 2014.
We are looking for Youth Ambassadors of any nationality who are based in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
You will need to dedicate a few hours of your time to the position every week, but this is not a full-time or paid role. At ONE we think youth is a state of mind. Anyone aged 18 – 35 can apply, but we would also like to hear from outstanding candidates who are over 35 but still young at heart!
The programme will run for 6 months with national launch events in April, and a Power Summit that will bring Youth Ambassadors from across Europe together in Brussels in July.
You will receive training on how to campaign, lobby decision-makers and talk to the media. You will have the opportunity to attend ONE events and put your skills into practice in meetings with high-level decision makers.
You will also be given the tools you need to organise your own campaign events, spread the word in your community, online and in the media.

Call for entries for 2014 SADC Media Awards and Water Media Awards Competition: 31 Mar

The South African chapter of the SADC Media programme has commenced with Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) inviting all media for entries to the 2014 SADC Media Awards competition.
The Awards were established following a decision by the Council of Ministers in 1996 to establish a sector that deals with matters relating to amongst others, information, culture and sport. The awards serve as part of ensuring a link, coordination and synchronisation between formal structures of SADC governments, civil society, academia, labour and the media.
In pursuit of the promotion of regional integration and cooperation (cross-border issues), the awards aim to recognise excellence in journalism in the area of print, photo, television, radio as well as to encourage media practitioners in member states to cover issues pertaining to the region.
The competition also consists of the Water Media Awards which are aimed at recognising stories that promote Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in the SADC region. The competition has four categories in print, photojournalism, television and radio.
The competition is administered by the National Adjudicating Committee (NAC) which is responsible for adjudicating in member states for submission to the Regional Adjudication Committee (RAC). The NAC is represented by media practitioners, journalists of different media houses as well as government officials.
The closing date is 31 March 2014.
