CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Located in the heart of Berlin, the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) is one of Europe’s largest non-university research institutes conducting basic social science research with a focus on problems of modern societies in a globalized world. Among the 160 German and international scientists are sociologists, political scientists, economists, legal scholars, and historians. The WZB offers a modern working environment where both equal opportunities and the compatibility of work and family are highly valued.
The International Social Science Council (ISSC) is an international organization that works to bring the best social science to bear on the biggest challenges of our time. It does this, for example, by publishing the World Social Science Report and organizing the World Social Science Forum. With its World Social Science Fellowsprogramme, the ISSC aims to help build the next generation of social science leaders who can create knowledge for solutions to global challenges. In this programme, talented early career social scientists are brought together at seminars to create new, interdisciplinary perspectives on a global challenge. Following the seminars, World Social Science Fellows are part of a network that is expected to be the start of new, international research collaborations.
The WZB, in cooperation with the ISSC, invites applications for one early-career scientist (Post-Doctoral researcher with no more than 5 years' work experience after their PhD or scientists without a PhD but with an equivalent level of research experience and output) residing and working in a developing country to conduct research for up to six months at the WZB. The research project of the fellow should focus on global societal problems with particular relevance to developing country contexts. Moreover, it should be linked to both research conducted at the WZB and to the notion of "Transforming Global Relations for a Just World," which is the topic of the ISSC's World Social Science Forum 2015.
Objective
Through their Global Fellowship Programme, the WZB and the ISSC aim at contributing to building a new generation of outstanding social scientists in developing countries who are willing and able to contribute to solving current global problems.
The WZB-ISSC Global Fellowship Programme enables an outstanding early-career social scientist from a developing country to spend four to six months in the exciting and stimulating environment of an exceptional social science research organisation in the heart of Germany. Besides allowing the Fellow to focus entirely on a dedicated research project, he/she is invited to participate in the intellectual life at the WZB. The Fellow will also become a member of the network of early career scientists  the ISSC is building with its World Social Science Fellows programme.
While in residence, the selected fellow is required to:
  • Conduct a public lecture or an academic seminar at the WZB
  • Write a report outlining a vision of his/her research field with relevance to developing countries in the 5 to 10 years to come
  • Write or contribute towards a paper that can be presented at the World Social Science Forum 2015, to take place from 13 to 16 September 2015 in Durban, South Africa.
On return to his/her home country, the fellow is expected to share his/her knowledge with the scientific community there as well as to contribute to the further development of the local science and education system. This could be achieved, for instance, through teaching Master’s or PhD level courses (where appropriate) based on the research done at the WZB.
In addition, the selected fellow will be encouraged to:
  • Take up the opportunity to contribute an article to the WZB discussion paper series or to the quarterly journal addressing issues of public concern for an expert readership beyond academia
  • To keep the WZB and ISSC informed of any publications that result from the research stay in Berlin.
The above outcomes will be profiled by the WZB and the ISSC, for example on their websites.
The WZB offers a grant for up to six months at a level commensurate with a German Post-Doctoral researcher, as well as a contribution to local accommodation (up to 500 EUR per month). Economy travel costs to and from Berlin will be reimbursed according to the German Federal Travel Expenses Regulations. We offer a work place (equipped with PC, Internet access and communication support) as well as full library privileges and additional technical services. The selected Fellow will also receive support to participate in the World Social Science Forum 2015.
Selection Process
Candidates should present:
  • A letter of motivation (what is the project, why is it important, what will be the outcome), including the preferred timing of the research stay at the WZB as well as an explanation of the difference the stay will make in their personal careers and in their home institutions (maximum 1 page).
  • A summary of their main research and teaching contributions, indicating how these relate to the research topics at the WZB. Candidates should also address the societal relevance of their research (maximum 1 page).
  • Two letters of recommendation from current or past senior colleagues.
  • A curriculum vitae, including information on education, publications, participation in research projects and networks, teaching experience, awards and prizes received and other pertinent experiences. (Note: The majority of the degrees should have been awarded in developing countries).
  • An indication of the candidate’s English language proficiency.
  • Agreement from their home institution to the research stay in Germany, if selected (applicable only if the candidate will be employed during the proposed period of the Fellowship).
All information should be submitted electronically, preferably in one PDF document, to: international.affairs@wzb.eu.
The closing date for applications is September 15, 2013.

Asia Pacific Youth Forum 2013 on Mountain issues and Post 2015 Development Agenda

Kathmandu, Nepal

30 September - 4 October 2013

Through its Asia-Pacific Mountain Network (APMN), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has been engaging youth and building their capacity to bring about positive changes in society through several different initiatives. Since it began in 2009, the global membership of the Youth Engagement in Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD) initiative has grown to 5,000 members, a majority of which are from ICIMOD’s regional member countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. In 2010, ICIMOD started organizing youth forums in member countries to build the technical capacity and leadership skills of youth in the region as well as to enhance their knowledge on the most burning issues in mountain development. The Asia-Pacific Youth Forum on Climate Actions and Mountain Issues in 2011 and the Asia Pacific Graduates' Youth Forum on Green Economy in 2012 were expanded to include the entire Asia-Pacific region, and the Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Sustainable Actions in 2012 held in conjunction with the Rio+20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, included participants from around the globe. As the preparation and follow-up of the Rio+20 process, In 2012/13 ICIMOD organized a series of National Youth Forums on Green Solutions in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan, ran awareness campaigns in Nepal, Pakistan, and other countries by mobilizing local youth initiatives and ICIMOD Youth Ambassadors. ICIMOD has partnered with more than two dozen regional, national, and global institutes in promoting youth activities and have organized several e-conferences, Climate Cafés, knowledge sharing workshops, the Earth Debate, capacity building events, and promoted networking-advocacy on the sideline of important international events. Some of the youth ambassadors were sent to Rio+20 conference in Brazil, the UNFCCC COP 18 in Doha, and the 2nd Asia Pacific Adaptation Forum in Bangkok to advocate for mountain issues in the context of ongoing debates on  sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
Building on the success of these ventures, ICIMOD is now preparing for the Asia Pacific Youth Forum 2013 on Mountain issues and Post 2015 Development Agenda, which will take place in Kathmandu, Nepal from 30 September to 4 October 2013. The event will bring together young scientists, early career professionals, young politicians and youth initiative leaders from the region and develop their knowledge on mountain issues and the Post-2015 Development Agenda as an input towards global processes on the development of the Post-2015 Development Agenda .
Asia Pacific Youth Forum 2013 will bring together 40 participants from more than 15 countries who are engaged in sustainability issues. With technical support from several leading institutions, the five-day programme will include capacity building and knowledge exchange sessions, leadership exercises, and excursions to nearby environmental projects.

Programs

Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa

Supporting the next generation of African academics working on peace, security and development issues
2013-2014 Fellows meet for a workshop at the University of Ghana.

The program, launched in June 2011, responds to a shortage of experienced faculty in African higher education. The Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program provides fellowships to nurture the intellectual development and increase retention of early-career faculty in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The program assists fellows to develop research opportunities and skills, obtain doctoral degrees, and participate in robust research communities. Toward this end, the project features a thematic focus in order to renew basic research agendas addressing peace, security, and development topics as well as strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity on these issues. Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, this project offers a replicable model at scale and complements foundation initiatives to develop and strengthen the next generation of African scholars.
The program features three distinct competitive fellowship opportunities for early-career social science faculty who hold positions in accredited colleges and universities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda:
The program encourages innovative research on peace, security, and development topics, moving the boundaries of scholarship and research by exploring concrete linkages between these themes. We envision supporting a diverse set of projects grappling with a range of processes using evidence-based research across both global and local perspectives. Some, we hope, will examine large-scale phenomena and others small-scale social processes. The strongest projects typically will explore connections across these scales. Applicants, for example, might propose projects exploring global flows of refugees across country borders and continents or the state of internally displaced persons affected by local and regional disruptions of livelihood and economic security. Others might look at street theater in refugee camps. Similarly, some fellows might test the proposition that global financial markets contribute to peace and stability while others might examine the role of local market culture in unstable regions. We also support work that advances contemporary research on peace and security issues, including research on human security, economic security, livelihoods and resilience, and failure of governance. Projects might explore any range of issues, including soaring unemployment rates, widespread discrimination against populations, the effects of climate change on food security and water basins, and the threats any one of these issues pose to peace, security, and development efforts. Above all projects should advance important fields of study and social science knowledge.
We strongly encourage applicants to explain how their work aligns with the program's thematic priorities and demonstrate their capacity to contribute to a network advancing innovative research on peace, security and development. Applicants therefore should submit a project proposal that has been written specifically for this fellowship competition, rather than simply submit the approved research proposal that they developed for their university. The project proposal for this competition offers applicants an opportunity to further hone their approach to their dissertation topic.
This program also offers two workshops each year to help fellows master research methodologies, engage key literature in their fields, and produce research publications. The Next Generation African Social Sciences program will support approximately 45 fellows each year across all three fellowship opportunities.
All applications must be submitted using the online application portal.
The next application deadline is December 1, 2013.
For inquiries or technical questions pertaining to the online application portal, please contact SSRC staff from the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Program: nextgenafrica@ssrc.org
