Vacancies at Himal Southasian


Himal Southasian, in a consolidating phase with its web portal and quarterly print ‘bookazine’, is looking to fill positions of Desk Editor, Assistant Editors, Web Manager, Marketing Manager, Editorial Assistant and Interns immediately. We seek individuals who are willing to be part of Himal’s exciting journalistic journey of connecting Southasia and delving into the challenge and excitement of the region and its various parts.
 

Desk Editor
 
The position’s responsibilities include supporting the editorial team in all aspects of the magazine’s production, from editorial communications to research and image selection, to overseeing fact-checking and proofing. However, the primary skill required is the ability to edit articles of the kind carried in review magazines such as Himal. Applicants will need to be able to turn around full-length article drafts on a wide range of topics, in accordance with the magazine’s in-house style. Besides foolproof competence in English-language editing, applicants must have a strong grounding in the social sciences and a keen understanding of Southasian history, economy, culture, geopolitics and current affairs. 
 
In addition the desk editor will be expected to undertake assigned managerial tasks relating to the growth of the magazine and for smooth running of the organisation.
 
Work experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in Southasian journalism. Substantial editing, reporting, research and writing in mainstream media, though work with academic journals will also be considered relevant.

Assistant Editors 
 
The position requires the ability to support all aspects of the magazine’s production – both online and in print. This includes keeping up to date with a wide range of issues related to Southasia, to develop story ideas, and to help commission and secure articles. The position reports to the Associate Editor. Assistant Editors will also help run the Himal blog (currently in redesign), select images for articles, oversee fact-checking, and supervise interns. However, the primary skill required is the ability to edit full-length articles of the kind carried in Himal. Applicants have to be able to turn around article drafts on a wide range of topics, in accordance with the magazine’s in-house style. Besides foolproof competence in English-language editing, applicants must have a keen understanding of Southasian history, economy, culture, geopolitics and current affairs.
 
Work Experience: Substantial editing, reporting, research and writing in mainstream media, though work with academic journals is also relevant. Experience in online journalism is an asset.

The position: This is a full-time position based in Kathmandu. Salary is between NPR 25,000-30,000 per month and commensurate with skill set and experience. This is a full-time position, starting immediately.

Web Manager
 
The position deals with the technical responsibilities associated with its growing media website. The web manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining the web and social media presence of Himal Southasian, in consultation with the rest of the editorial team. The primary role will be to make the website a commercially viable, well-visited portal that promotes information exchange between Southasians, in contrast to other country-specific portals.
 
Specific responsibilities
 
Oversee website design and development; oversee/upload various sections of the website; supervise and take responsibility for maintenance and smooth running of website; supervise website and be part of its marketing.
 
Apply if you have
 
Related experience; a discerning eye for visual and graphic content; required computer-related and online technology skills; basic coding skills; fluency in English language; an understanding of the specific needs of developing a high-traffic portal that seeks to increase communication and understanding across Southasia.

Marketing Manager
 
Himal Southasian is looking to spread its wings and implement a sales, marketing and outreach strategy that takes advantage of new openings and possibilities. We are seeking a motivated Marketing Manager who can help us harness our existing and potential subscriber and readership base to make Himal as successful in the marketplace as it already is in the mindscape.
 
The position requires someone who understands that selling Himal Southasian is different from a traditional sales and marketing job, and is excited by the prospect of joining an organisation that combines a solid editorial tradition of a quarter century with new ideas of outreach. The marketing manager should be eager to meet the challenge of positioning this unique product in the market with innovative strategies. Though a magazine of long-standing, Himal is also an organisation poised on the cusp of growth.
 
Applicants must be demonstrably motivated, possess an understanding of the global publishing market even as it transforms, and be able to carry out tasks independently, under managerial oversight. The ability to communicate fluently in written and spoken English is essential and fluency in some other major languages of Southasia would be an asset. Given the specific needs of the job, we have to say that marketing experience or degrees are not required, while the ability to think outside the box in order to pursue required outreach is essential. Tasks will include reaching out to potential subscribers in Southasia and beyond; finding new outlets for sales; coordinating sales and subscription; and planning outreach campaigns in coordination with the editorial team.

Editorial Assistant
 
The position deals with secretarial and administrative tasks under the supervision of the Associate Editor. The applicant must be able to communicate fluently in English both in speech and writing, have the ability to collate and organise files and data, keep track of deadlines and carry out assigned tasks independently and efficiently.

Interns
The Himal Southasian editorial team is looking for interns to work with us in our Kathmandu office. We require a minimum commitment of 3 months.

Key responsibilities  
Fact-checking all magazine content, suggesting and researching potential stories, researching and writing blog posts, tasks related to updating and maintaining the website, performing select administrative tasks, other writing opportunities are also available
Apply if you
Have at least a 12th-grade or IA-level diploma (or are in their last year of high school), are interested in journalism, want to learn about Southasia, have excellent English-language skills, can commit to a 3 month internship, pay keen attention to detail.
