A training programme for EU students

We would particularly welcome applications from students from the following under-represented countries:
  • Croatia - Bulgaria -Malta - Slovenia
  • Ireland - Luxembourg - Denmark - Estonia

Testimonials from a former participant

"Regarding my Vulcanus year, there was clearly a ‘before’ and an ‘after’, and I can firmly say it has been the most important and enriching experience in my life so far. In this programme, you receive a unique opportunity to improve yourself both personally and professionally by actually participating in the Japanese working environment and society, as well as learning or improving your Japanese language. Financially-speaking, Vulcanus is unbeatable. You will not find any other similar programme which allows everybody, even those with modest incomes, to have a totally-covered one year stay in Japan. Japan is now a part of me, and I know that, along with the friends for life that I made there, it is something I will never forget."
José Enrique Serrano Comes (ES)
trainee at TUV, VJ2011-12

"a) Japan is a place of endless fascination with a startlingly impressive culture.
b) Vulcanus is an advantageous programme, full of experiences and surprises both in the personal and professional sphere.
a+b = The perfect combination for an unforgettable year for a young researcher or student. Being a participant in this programme, I gained invaluable experiences, beautiful memories and very good friends. But more importantly, I was taught and learned a lot of things from kind and modest people in daily life and from world-leading researchers in NTT. The last year for me has been a big step forward in many aspects of my life and I am very thankful for that."
Maria Anagnosti (GR)
trainee at NTT BRL, VJ2011-12

Your Europe, Your Say 2014!

7:05 AM No comments
  • Event Information

  • Practicalities
  • YOUth!

So, you’re too young or think you don’t know enough about EU politics to vote … But who says you can’t still have your say?

I certainly wouldn’t dare. In fact, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) would love to hear from you.  Having members in day-to-day touch with the people of Europe, we cherish the opinions and ideas of all citizens, young and old. But it may seem hard for students in the distant corners of the Union to have their say on Europe’s future. Brussels is just so far away!

So we have organised the most exciting, yet instructive, field trip ever … all the way to the EU’s capital … where 16- and 17-year-olds from all over Europe can meet like-minded students, talk to political leaders and exchange views.
It could be you, if your school is selected to take part in the ‘Your Europe, Your Say’ event, hosted by the EESC from 26-28 March 2014. But first you have to convince your teacher to apply via the online registration form before the closing date on 30 November (midnight Brussels time).
One school from each of the 28 Member States will be picked at random and if yours is chosen, you might be one of the three lucky students who, together with their teacher, will be shown around Brussels, the EU district and sights. But that’s not all.

European Parliament elections are coming up in 2014. Under the campaign slogan ‘act, react, impact’, citizens are being encouraged to choose who will represent them for the next five-year term. It’s a big deal for Europe, but most of you probably think, “Why should I care … I’m not old enough to vote, anyway?”
Well, you should care because decisions made in the EU affect you, your friends, your parents and, yes, your school.  And we think you should have your say. So in Brussels, we will organise a real-life debate, where you will have to negotiate and eventually agree on a resolution that could leave a lasting impression on Europe.

Sign up to ‘Your Europe, Your Say 2014’ so your actions and reactions can have an impact too.
Jane Morrice
EESC Vice President

The aim is to open new perspectives and consider the implications of what is happening on a cultural, economical, social or political level on a local, national and European scale. These young students in journalism will have the unique opportunity to be trained by French professionals and to start their career in a dynamic European environment.

Youth Leadership Program with Southeast Asia

Youth Leadership Program with Southeast Asia

Youth Leadership Program with Southeast Asia

Youth Leadership Program with Southeast Asia

Information for Applicants
Application Deadline: December 27, 2013

Program Description:

Secondary school students from Thailand are invited to apply for participation in the Youth Leadership Program with Southeast Asia.  The program will be offered for 50 to 60 participants from countries in Southeast Asia that are members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).  There will be 5 students and 1 educator selected to represent Thailand.
The program will employ a highly interactive approach both in workshops and in a range of public and community settings.  Through engagement with the activities of U.S. high schools, community organizations, youth groups, and community leaders in each location, the student and adult participants will better understand civic participation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy.
This is an intensive program with three segments:  (1) A pre-departure orientation in Bangkok; (2) a three-week exchange program that will offer students and teachers or community/ leaders the opportunity to explore the principles of leadership and community activism in the United States; and (3) follow-on activities, where participants will conduct projects in their home communities.  The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive. The program sponsors seek energetic applicants who are ready to develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities.
*  *  *  *  *  *  *

This program is designed to promote high-quality leadership, civic responsibility, and civic activism among our countries’ future leaders.  It will offer a practical examination of the principles of democracy and civil society as practiced in the United States and provide participants with training that allows them to develop their leadership skills.

In addition to the themes of civic education, community service, and leadership, the program may also explore themes such as care for the environment, media literacy, and/or drug abuse prevention.
Participants will visit several communities in the United States.  The program will focus on interactive activities, practical experiences, and other hands-on opportunities to learn about the fundamentals of a civil society, community service, conflict resolution, and building leadership skills.  The program will also include some school-based activities so that participants can meet their American peers, experience a U.S. school environment, and participate in some classes.  Cultural and recreational activities will balance the schedule.  Participants will live with American host families for most of the exchange.

An important part of the program is the development and implementation of the projects to implement on their return home.  These projects will respond to a need in the school or community.  Examples include supporting student government or other means of student involvement in the decision making process in schools, producing visual materials that share information on social issues, developing peer-support or peer-mediation programs or workshops, cooperating with local NGOs trying to develop a spirit of volunteerism, or supporting activities that help increase media coverage of youth issues.  All participants will be expected to complete these follow-on projects.

What else do I need to know?
The United States Government, in conjunction with its private partners, will pay for domestic transportation, international transportation to and from the United States, orientations, program fees and administration, site visits and seminars, lodging and most meals, some cultural activities, educational materials, accident and sickness coverage, and a modest amount of pocket money.  Participants will stay with volunteer host families.
Participants are responsible for expenses related to the application process (copying, mailing, photographs, etc.), passport fees, and spending money for souvenirs, telephone calls, and other personal items in the United States.
Participants will travel to the United States on J-1 exchange visitor visas provided through this program. By accepting this visa, participants will be subject to a two-year home residency requirement, meaning they must return to and live in their home country for a total of two years before they would be eligible for an immigrant or temporary worker U.S. visa.  This does not restrict other types of visas, however, so this would not prevent you from being able to apply for a student visa to attend university, for example.

Who is eligible to apply?
Student applicants must...
  • be at least 15 years old and not more than 17 years old by April 1, 2014
  • have at least one semester of high school remaining after the end of the program
  • have good English skills
  • have permission from both parents and schools to participate in the entire program.
What are the criteria for selection?
Students will be evaluated on the following characteristics:
  • demonstrated leadership in their schools or communities

The Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) is an annual intercultural leadership programme that aims to lay a foundation for dialogue, mutual understanding and knowledge sharing among young leaders from the Middle East, North Africa and Sweden.
The YLVP is designed to provide the participants with new skills, broadened networks and innovative tools to strengthen their work to drive social change in their respective contexts. The participants are visionaries who are in a position to make a difference. They are young, open-minded leaders in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen and Sweden who are actively working for democracy and human rights within the spheres of society, culture, politics and media.
During and after the programme the participants will be part of an active network that will boost creativity and support their personal and professional development, while also laying the platform for a more connected future. Since the launch of the YLVP in 2008, the programme alumni network has grown to comprise more than 140 young leaders.
The next YLVP will start on May 18, 2014!  You are welcome to apply between November 11 – December 13, 2013.
