Purpose and background of award
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist refugees and other students who are financially disadvantaged and who meet the criteria to continue their language study by providing financial assistance for a further semester's study at AUT.
Entry criteria
- Applicants must be NZ citizens or permanent residents.
- The scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in English language programmes in the School of Language and Culture in the semester prior to the award.
- Applicants must have successfully completed at least one semester in their programme prior to the award.
- Applicants must be supported by English Language teaching staff and have a history of high achievement, good attendance and high motivation in the previous semester.
- Applicants must be facing a degree of financial hardship that hinders their ability to continue study.
- Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic ability and financial hardship.
- Priority will be given to refugees
- Applicants who are aiming to staircase into mainstream study will be given preference.

Values
The scholarship covers full tuition and learner services levy fees for one semester of full-time study.
Number of awards offered
Up to four scholarships are available annually: two in Semester One and two in Semester Two.
Tenure of award
The scholarship is tenable for one semester of full-time study in the Certificate in English Language or the Certificate in English for Academic Study.
Application process
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
AUT Scholarship Application Form and Certificate of English Language Nomination Form to be completed by applicants and their class teacher.
Statement of eligibility and support from current lecturer.
Statement of financial situation.
Letter from Work and Income Case Manager or other evidence of eligibility for Work and Income support (this includes Student Allowance).
Applications will be forwarded to the Scholarships Office by the School of Language and Culture Scholarships Coordinator.
Selection process
Applicants will be nominated by teaching staff and considered by a selection panel from the School of Language and Culture consisting of the Head/Deputy Head of School, the Coordinator of Study Grants and Scholarships,and at least one Programme Leader.
If no scholarship is awarded in any semester, additional awards may be offered in the following semester provided that the total number of scholarships does not increase.
No scholarship will be awarded upon any occasion if the panel is of the opinion that there is no applicant of sufficient merit applying for the award.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
This scholarship may not be held in conjunction with any other fees scholarship.
The recipient may hold additional non-tuition fee based scholarships with the approval of the Head of Department and the Scholarships Office.
Recipients must attend regularly and undertake course work to the satisfaction of the teaching staff.
Recipients should be available for any publicity or advertising around the award of the scholarship.
