IEAS Graduate Fellowships in East Asian Studies

The Centers for Chinese Studies (CCS), Japanese Studies (CJS) and Korean Studies (CKS) and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) announce their 2014-2015 fellowship competitions for continuing graduate students in East Asian studies. Students may apply to only one of the four Center/Institute competitions, so should carefully consider which one best suits their needs. Please contact Center/Institute staff with any questions. Files may be transferred internally between the CCS, CJS, CKS and IEAS as appropriate.

Announcement
The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) announces its 2014-2015 fellowship competition for continuing graduate students in East Asian Studies. Subject to availability of funding, a small number of competitive awards of up to $6,000 (maximum) are available. We expect most awards, however, will be in the $1,500-$3,500 range. Successful applicants should propose a coherent plan of research/study that will result in tangible progress towards their graduate degree. IEAS fellowships are intended to facilitate special research proposals and study plans, and are not intended for general support.

1. IEAS will consider applications from students whose research goes beyond the boundaries of one country or region. Regions may include China, Japan, Korea, and their neighbors in Northeast Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, or beyond. Students whose work focuses on only a single country should apply to the appropriate Center. Single-country applications received by IEAS may be referred to the Center for Chinese, Japanese, or Korean Studies.
2. IEAS will accept applications for most academic purposes including pre-dissertation research or study, dissertation research, dissertation write-up awards, etc. In all cases, a specific plan of research/study must be proposed, along with a statement of expected outcome. Awardees will be required to file a brief final report to IEAS at the end of the award period.
3. IEAS strongly encourages applicants to apply for funding from other campus and extramural sources and to apply to IEAS for the additional funding that may still be needed for the project or study period. IEAS awards are insufficient to cover a full year of funding for any applicant.
4. Awards may be taken as early as May 2014 and as late as Spring 2015.

Applicants should submit the following materials to Martin Backstrom, Associate Director, Institute of East Asian Studies, 2223 Fulton Street, 6th Floor, by Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Awards will be announced late April.

1. Application Cover Sheet (PDF File)
2. A current Curriculum Vitae
3. A current Transcript (unofficial copies OK) from UCB together with a list of any courses currently in progress
4. A List of All Financial Assistance received during graduate study, including fellowships from ALL sources (extramural fellowships as well), research assistantships, teaching appointments, and grants
5. A complete List of all Support, including the amount of funds requested for the coming academic year, with notes on the status of the requests.
6. A detailed Research/Study Proposal for the period of requested support (max. 2 pages)
7. An Estimated Budget for your project
8. Two Letters of Recommendation (mailed or emailed separately to IEAS). Emailed recommendations go to backstrom@berkeley.edu.

Materials may be submitted in hard copy or by email (in a single PDF file preferred). Letters of recommendation should be submitted separately by recommenders.
